Archetypes to look at to go with vivisectionist include: At higher level the throw anything feat will lose significance as (probably) the brew potion feat will too, but both can be useful for the arcane trickster up through the middle levels. In addition the alchemist has a better fortitude save than the rogue and several discoveries that can be advantageous to an arcane trickster, as well two bonus feats that can serve you well at lower levels: Throw anything (alchemist version) and brew potion. It has intelligence based extracts which can either be prepared ahead of time, or on the fly provided you have a minute for each one you want to use. Vivisectionist Alchemist : For a wizard (or magus) the vivisectionist alchemist can make an excellent choice to get sneak attack. What’s more we can get evasion in a ring so that class feature has a bit less value to the sorcerer compared to swift action invisibility from close to the start of your arcane trickster career. All in all I still think it’s a great trade, as anyone can find traps and you can even disable magical traps with something other than the disable device skill, which aside from the bonus on perception and disable device checks is all trapfinding does. For some this isn’t a huge deal, for others it is. It also gains poison use which is fairly useless to most arcane tricksters, and the no trace ability, however these later abilities come at the cost of trapfinding, trapsense and evasion. The ninja trick vanish allows you to go invisible as a swift action which is one of the primary ways of gaining sneak attack damage with rays. The ninja has a specific ninja trick that makes this work, vanish. Ninja: An offshoot of the rogue the ninja makes a great choice for sorcerers that want to go arcane trickster. Sickened is the more useful debuff and Thug doesn’t require a save - but if you are going in and out as fast as possible for the sneak attack Rake is a good choice. However you get it at level 1 instead (but give up trapfinding). Ra ke - much like the thug only with a skill check and they are shaken instead of sickened. ![]() However if you think you’ll be on a shoestring budget this might catch your eye. This is of course generally useful… however there are items you can buy that do similar (indeed more powerful) things. Sniper – The reduced penalties with the bow only has use if you intend to grab two levels of arcane archer (more on that later) however the third level ability extends the range you can sneak attack at. At later levels you’ll be able to debuff while you blast. This means they’ll hit less, deal less damage and have penalties to their save throws. Thug – at third level you can choose to forgo 1d6 sneak attack damage to make targets sickened. However you might want to consider the following Archetypes instead of a simple rogue: ![]() ![]() Rogue is still a solid choice for getting into the arcane trickster: You get evasion, a rogue talent (you can get more by spending feats), and trap sense. Ro gue : Plain ol d vanilla rogue, three levels in this and you have your sneak attack dice. There are multiple ways to gain sneak attack in pathfinder currently, but not all of them are equal, and some of them are better or worse depending on how you plan to cover your spell casting needs: The easy parts of getting in are of course the skills and the alignment, I’m not going to cover these as it isn’t worth the time, instead I’m going to focus on the arcane casting and sneak attack prerequisites: The arcane trickster has the following prerequisites:Ģ nd level arcane spell casting and the ability to cast mage handĭisable Device 4 ranks, Escape Artist 4 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 4 ranks. I intend to go over the multiple ways you can enter the class, what tends to work well with the class, and what tends to not work out as well so pitfalls can be avoided. It is also one that it is easy to make mistakes in if one isn’t careful and aware of what works and doesn’t work with the prestige class. The arcane trickster is a complex and interesting prestige class. Abraham Spalding’s Guide to the Arcane Trickster. ![]()
